What Is Lock Rekeying?

Lock rekeying is the process of changing the internal pin configuration of your existing lock so that it works with a new set of keys. The old keys will no longer operate the lock after rekeying. This is different from lock replacement - the lock body, handle, and exterior hardware remain unchanged. Only the internal pins are swapped.

Rekeying is a faster and more affordable alternative to replacing your entire lock, and it provides the same security benefit: anyone with a copy of your old key can no longer access your property. When Should You Rekey Your Locks?

Rekeying is recommended in several common situations:

• Moving into a new home - Previous owners, tenants, or their contacts may still have keys to your locks
• Lost or stolen keys - If you cannot account for all copies of your key, rekeying ensures the lost key is useless
• After a break-in or attempted break-in - Even if the lock was not damaged, rekeying provides peace of mind
• Relationship changes - When a housemate, tenant, or partner moves out and you want to restrict access
• Consolidating keys - Rekey multiple locks to work with a single key for convenience. For larger properties, a master key system offers even greater flexibility

How Lock Rekeying Works

The rekeying process involves disassembling the lock cylinder and replacing the existing pins with new pins that match a different key profile:

1. Remove the lock cylinder - The locksmith removes the cylinder from the lock body without detaching the entire lock from the door
2. Disassemble the cylinder - The plug is removed from the cylinder housing to expose the pin chambers
3. Replace the pins - Old pins are removed and new pins of specific lengths are inserted to match the new key’s cuts
4. Reassemble and test - The cylinder is reassembled, reinstalled, and tested with the new keys to ensure smooth operation

The entire process takes 10 to 20 minutes per lock and is done on-site at your door.

Rekeying vs. Lock Replacement

In most cases, rekeying is the smart choice if your existing lock hardware is in good condition. If the lock itself is worn, damaged, or you want to upgrade to a higher-security model, door lock repair or full replacement is the better option.

Can All Locks Be Rekeyed?

Most pin tumbler locks can be rekeyed, which covers the majority of residential locks in Singapore including:

• HDB main door mortise locks
• Deadbolts
• Knob locks
• Lever handle locks
• Padlocks (some models)

Locks that typically cannot be rekeyed include wafer locks, disc detainer locks, and most digital/electronic locks. For these lock types, we offer replacement or reprogramming services instead.
